Transient Stability Analysis of Virtual Synchronous Machine Considering the Damping Effect

摘要

Virtual synchronous machines (VSM) have become a promising solution for grid integration of renewable energy and energy storage systems. To replace the conventional synchronous machines with power-electronics-based VSMs, transient stability under large disturbances must be guaranteed. This paper reveals that the well-known equal area criterion (EAC) may lead to over-conservative prediction. On this basis, the phase portrait analysis is adopted to evaluate the VSM transient stability considering the damping effect. Hardware-in-loop (HIL) results are presented to verify the theoretical findings.
