Abstract

The behavior of the phase formation for the Mg-B system was investigated by thermodynamic calculation, couple diffusion and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The result of thermodynamic calculation indicates that the solid-solid reaction for the Mg-B system will occur all in the temperature range from 298 K to 923 K. The results of diffusion experiment show that the solid reaction between Mg and B proceeds through Mg diffusing into B. The DSC research result indicates that the starting temperature of solid-solid reaction, Mg melting and liquid-solid reaction is 527.12°C, 650.73°C and 660.82°C, respectively. Based on the research results of diffusion and thermodynamic analysis, the reaction model of Mg-B system is proposed.
