Abstract

Polybutadiene/SiO2 (PB/SiO2) hybrid material was prepared by in-situ emulsion radical grafting of vinyltriethoxysilane(VTES) onto PB latex. SiO2 was generated via hydrolysis-condensation of VTES. Si content, gel fraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA) were employed to characterize the structure. The changes of properties were determined and formation mechanism of the hybrid material was discussed. The results indicate that the utility efficient of VTES is up to 88.6% due to VTES is chemically bonded to PB chain and PB chain is crosslinked through silica core formed by hydrolysis-condensation of VTES. After grafting process, gel ratio increases, thermal degradation rate decreases and mechanical properties such as mooney, tensile strength and elongation at break change significantly.
