Abstract

The condensed polynuclear aromatic (COPNA) resin was synthesized using coal tar pitch as monomer and terephthalic aldehyde as cross-linking agent in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid. Reaction mechanism was studied using FT-IR and 1H-NMR. TGA-DSC was employed to study the thermal behavior of COPNA resin. Furthermore, the relation between react time and different content of COPNA resin was investigated. The results show that coal tar pitch and terephthalic aldehyde can be used to synthesize COPNA resin. The COPNA resin possesses good thermo-stability and high coke value. Moreover, the resin has good processablity and excellent bonding performance as well.
