Abstract

The mechanical clinching technology has been widely used in the joining of aluminium alloy sheet of the automobile. However, the development of this technology is restricted by the high protrusion above the clinched joint. A flat-reshaping method which is used to join the aluminium alloy sheet of the automobile is proposed to reduce the protrusion height. The flat-reshaped joint is produced by extensible dies and flat dies, then the tensile test is carried out on the clinched joint. The tensile strength, energy absorption and failure mode are gotten by the tensile test. The neck thickness and protrusion height are also analyzed. The results show that the flat-reshaping method can increase the strength and energy absorption of the joint. Neck fracture mode is the main failure mode of the flat-reshaped joint. In addition, the neck thickness can be enlarged to increase the strength of joint with a reduction of the protrusion height by the flat-reshaping method.
