Abstract
The carbonation process of overbased calcium alkyl salicylate was investigated using FE-EM and FT-IR methods. Results showed that the size of colloidal particles increased along with the increase of product TBN (total basic number) during the carbonation process, while the size of colloidal particles decreased when TBN began dropping. The product TBN reached its maximum at 74 min reaction time. It was also observed that calcium carbonate contents in the product showed the same tendency of changes as the product TBN did, and that the calcite would appear when the carbonation process occurred.
