Abstract

As a novel strengthened glass, engineered stress profile (ESP) glass has attracted extensive attention during recent years. The theoretical basis of the ESP glass was reviewed. The processing and mechanical properties of some ESP glasses were introduced. Compared with the conventional strengthened glass, the merits of the ESP glass (such as high strength, low strength variability, high surface damage resistance and multiple cracking before final failure) were outlined. The combination with other strengthening methods to improve glass strength and microwave hybrid heating or electric field assisted ion exchange used to shorten treatment time and lower cost for processing were proposed to be some aspects on the studies of ESP glass in the future.
