Abstract

The multiple cold isostatic pressing (MCIP) process was developed to manufacture bulk Bi-2223 materials with different shapes and dimensions, such as tubes, rods and cylinders. In this process, the Bi-2223 powder was formed into rods or tubes by the oil cold isostatic pressing method, and the formed materials were sintered, then the bulk materials were cold pressed and sintered again to obtain density and fabric structure. By using MCIP, we could obtain high-quality Bi-2223 bulks with good shape, high density, and smooth surface. In addition, joints between superconductor and current wires were fabricated by Ag-Mg alloy foils and Sn-Pb alloy during the preparation of Bi-2223 bulks. Then, Bi-2223 bulks could be linked directly with current wires to form current leads. As a result, joint resistance was measured as 10-6 Ω at 77 K. The transport critical current of the current lead measured by a four-probe method was found to be 1000 A at 77 K in self-field. The Ic decreased to 500 A when magnetic field increased to 0.1 T. The microstructure of the sample was characterized through the X-ray diffraction pattern and scanning electron microscopy.
