Abstract

Experiments were made at the following optimal procedure for improving mechanical properties of CF: (1) Heat treatment at 2500°C. Temperature was increased at the rate of 70°C/h from 400°C to 2500°C. 2500°C was maintained for 2h. Argon replaced atmosphere before 400°C was reached. (2) Heat treatment at 1500°C. Temperature was increased at the rate of 70°C/h from 400°C to 1500°C. 1500°C was maintained for 2h. Nitrogen replaced atmosphere before 400°C was reached. (3) Liquid phase sizing. In a trough filled with epoxy, the carbon fibers were moved at 0.5m/min. This operation made the sizing reach approximately 8.0wt% of CF. (4) Liquid phase oxidation after liquid phase sizing. The carbon fibers were treated for 16h in a sulphuric acid solution.
