Abstract
A tension Kolsky bar apparatus proposed by Staab and Gilat was simulated by using finite element method (FEM). The effects of stiffness and visco-stiffness of the hydraulic pump on the input pulse and reflect pulse were demonstrated. The results show that the phenomena of incident pulse did not unloaded to zero reported by Chichili and Ramesh indeed is the reason of the end conditions of the input bar from the ideal rigid condition. With the choosing parameters of hydraulic pump, numerical modeling results of the stress pulses are pretty good consistent with the experimental data. Finally, a very efficient, but very simple approach was proposed.
