Abstract

As-cast microstructure of ZA53 Mg alloy in sand casting is mainly composed of δ-Mg matrix phase and τ [Mg12(Al, Zn)49] compound, in which semi-continuous network τ phase is distributed along δ-Mg matrix phase boundary. Tensile strength at room temperature and plasticity of the quenched alloy can be improved remarkably after solid solution at 335°C for 17 hours. Mechanical properties of the quenched ZA53 alloy is σb = 245 MPa and δ = 12% and the fracture morphology transforms from mixed fracture to tough fracture due to microstructure fully transforming single solid solution phase after solid solution at 343°C for 17 h.
