Abstract

A multi-layer coating for C / C composites with a Si-W outer layer by liquid reaction-formation method, SiC barrier by CVD and transition layer by siliconization is prepared, and then the failure mechanism in the oxidation process is investigated. The results show that the gases produced by the interfacial reaction between the oxide film and the outer layer are mainly responsible for the coating failure. Non-homogeneous nucleation, growth and burst of the gas bubbles at the interface leads to the formation of holes on the oxide film. The holes will develop to defects because new bubbles nucleate, grow and burst easily at the holes.
