Abstract

The interaction between particles is a key factor affecting strength of electro-rheological fluid. The model of equivalent plate conductivity was proposed and the equivalent thickness of the plate was given. The model was used to calculate attractive force between sightly contacting spherical particles in non-polar liquid. The model simplifies not only calculations of attractive force and yield stress, but also reflects directly the effects of each physical parameters on attractive force. It has been found that the yield stress predicted by the model is consistent with quasi-static measured results, the relation between attractive force and electric field intensity is approximately linear, and the yield stress and applied electric field exhibit exponential relation, its index lies between 1 and 2.
