Abstract

Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy ingots were prepared by different vacuum consumable arc remelting (VAR) processes. The effects of melting current intensity and stirring magnetic field on solidification behavior of the ingots were investigated, and molten pool profile and solidification structure at different stages, such as arc starting, melting and feeding, were analyzed. The results indicate that without stirring magnetic field, coarse grain can be observed in the ingots with a narrow molten pool, while with stirring magnetic field, grain size becomes fine with wide molten pool and evident rotation. With increasing in current intensity, grain size becomes coarse in the ingot with deepening the molten pool.
