Abstract

Dual-phase Mg alloy consisting of α-Mg and Mg12 Pr was prepared by permanent mold casting. Effects of Pr content on microstructure and phase constituent of Mg-0.6Zr alloy were investigated by optical microscope (OM), SEM (scanning electron microscope) and XRD (X-ray diffraction). Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of the prepared alloy at room temperature were measured by tensile testing. The results show that grain size in the magnesium alloy can be refined as a result of creation of high strength inter-metallic compound, which is responsible for the improvement of mechanical properties of the alloy. Compared with those of Mg-0. 6Zr alloy, the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of Mg-0. 6Zr-0. 6Pr alloy are increased by 9. 8% 42% and 118%, respectively.
