Abstract
Effects of crystal orientation on microstructure of molten pool were studied. The experiment was carried out in laser rapidly solidified DD2 single crystal. The microstructure of the molten pool during laser surface remelting was strongly affected by orientation of base metal and scanning direction. It was found that crystallographic effects can influence dendrite growth by favoring growth along a preferred crystallographic direction. Crystallographic effects were found to be greater than that of heat flux during dendrite growth.
