Abstract

A new type of particle impact damped dynamic absorber, which consists of an elastic element and a box partially filled with impact particles, was designed and used in the vibration control of a five-storeys frame structure model. The dynamic properties of this type of damped dynamic absorber were experimentally compared with those of the classical dynamic absorber, which has the same mass and stiffness as the damped absorber. The frequency response functions(FRFs) of the frame structure with the two types of absorbers were measured respectively. It is shown that the particle impact damped absorber has a wider frequency band than the classical absorber. Vibration control test results of the frame structure subjected to random excitation demonstrates that the particle impact damped dynamic absorber exhibits a better random vibration absorption behavior than the classical dynamic absorber. It is expected that this new type of dynamic absorber can be applied in the control of seismic and wind excited vibration response of tall buildings.
