Abstract

Few methods can be used to determine the crack initiation behavior in solid metal-induced embrittlement (SMIE). The mechanisms of embrittler transport in SMIE have not been clearly under stood. A method is developed for determining crack initiation stress, strain, life and cracking threshold intensity factor of solid silver-induced embrittlement of Ti6Al14V alloy. The fractographic characteristics of embrittled Ti6A14V were examined using fractal geometry. Mistakes made in the open literature for calculating the surface-diffusion rate associated with embrittled surface are corrected based on analysis of the fractal feature of diffusion path of the embrittlement agent.
