Abstract
A new approach for design of spiral bevel gears based on local synthesis method was proposed. One of pinion machine settings, work offset, can be assigned in advance, and then the other pinion machine settings could be deduced. In order to get a predesigned parabolic function of transmission errors with limited magnitude of maximal transmission errors, and to obtain the contact path as a straight line with the assigned orientation, a developed genetic algorithm was used to optimize several parameters, such as work offset, the derivation of transmission ratio, second ratio of roll, third ratio of roll etc. so that the overall control of engagement quality was realized. In this process, tooth contact analysis (TCA) was embedded to constitute the design route.
