Abstract
To study the effect of localized spalling defect on the contact deformation, the contact stress and the contact width between the roller and the raceway, and bearing vibrations, an equivalent finite element model of the roller and the raceway contact and a dynamic model of a cylindrical roller bearing with consideration of the transition region of the localized spalling defect were established according to the analysis of contact relationship between the roller and raceway. The effect of defect width on the contact deformation, the contact stress, the contact width and the contact stiffness, as well as the bearing vibrations between the roller and the raceway was studied. The results show that with the increase of the defect width, the contact width between the roller and the raceway decreases, the contact stress and the contact deformation increase. The vibration amplitude for the defect case with the transition region is larger than that for the defect case without the transition region.
