title = "Using co-simulation method to analyze the communication delay impact in agent-based wide area power system stabilizing control",
abstract = "The time delay existing in the data communication is a potential detriment to wide area power system control. This paper analyzes the impact of time delay to a multi-agent based power system stabilizing control with a co-simulation method. The co-simulation method uses two off-the-shelf softwares: MATLAB and OPNET to run the simulation concurrently. MATLAB is used to simulate the power systems and the controllers while OPNET is used to simulate the communication network with time delays. A two-area four-generator system is used as a case study. Simulation results not only demonstrate the latency impact on the performance of stabilizing control, but also indicate to what extent the following factors, network data rate, packet size, and background utilization, contribute to time delay. can degrade the performance of controls in the power systems.",
