title = "Fabrication of porous silicon nitride ceramics with gradient microstructure",
abstract = "A porous silicon nitride ceramic with gradient microstructure was prepared by a combination process of pressureless sintering and chemical vapor deposition. Lu203 additive and phenolic resin acted as sintering aid and pore-forming agent. respectively. The content of phenolic resin had more apparent influence on pore size distribution than on porosity. When 15 wt.% phenolic resin was employed, the porous Si3N4 ceramic showed uniform microstructure with well distributed micropores. which attained high flexural strength and fracture toughness. With the increase of the phenolic resin content, the pore size of ceramic increased, leading to a decreased strength and toughness. After chemical vapor deposition process. the porous Si3N4 ceramic with dense Si3NJ coating attained an improved microstructure. leading to an increase in the flexural strength and the surface hardness.",
