Cutting Process and Force Distribution of Three Typical BTA Drills for BTA Deep Hole Drill

The BTA (Boring and Trepanning Association) deep-hole drilling is a self-guided machining method. The cutting force and its distribution of cutting tooth and guide pads of the BTA drill plays an essential role in the manufacturing process. This paper aims to analyze the influence of the teeth location and geometric dimensions of BTA drill on the drilling process, and study cutting force distribution of unit cutting tooth of three typical BTA drills. It ran experiments on three typical BTA drills cutting the different diameter cylinder workpiece based on the experimental platforms of BTA drilling and cutting force measuring system. The results show that the cutting force components of unit cutting tooth of three typical BTA drills present the non-uniform distribution which is increasing as the radius increases. The teeth location and geometric dimensions of BTA drills only affect the radial force of unit tooth, but has negligible impact on the main cutting force and axial force of the unit tooth and the drilling force distribution of unit tooth along the radius. The results provide reference information for designing and optimizing the staggered teeth BTA drill.
