Abstract

Surface modification technology was used to prepare organo-coated oil-soluble nano-Cu particles, and various dosages of nano-Cu were used as additives in 85 W/90 GL-5 heavy-duty gear oil. The effect of nano-Cu additive on the tribological behavior of heavy-duty gear oil was studied by a four-ball tester. Nano-Cu additive possessed high load-carrying capacity, good anti-wear, friction reducing, and EP performance. Thus, the tribological behavior of the heavy-duty gear oil was improved considerably. Nano-Cu additive took place in the tribo-chemical reactions and its lubrication mechanism was inferred that a Cu deposited film and a chemical reaction film were formed on the rubbing surfaces of steel ball, and synergisms existed between the two films to improve the performance of anti-wear, friction-reducing, and load-carrying capacity of the heavy duty gear oil effectively.
