Abstract

The sources and formation mechanisms of beta flecks in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy are understood by using SEM, EDS and chemical composition analysis technique. To minimizing their occurrence in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy, the effect of VAR process parameters on beta flecks formation in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al is analyzed in this paper. The results show that the beta flecks appear bright and have distinct boundaries, with irregular shapes and different sizes. There are no equiaxed alpha grains in the beta flecks zone, and its grains are very bigger than that in matrix zone. The beta flecks was depleted in aluminum element and enriched in iron element, although the vanadium level appears to be similar to that of the matrix. To minimizing beta flecks, it is efficiently to adopt small melting current and bring to bear suitable magnetic stirring.
