Abstract
In order to improve interlaminar toughness of cyanate eater resin/glass fiber composites, the effect of three kinds of whisker, i.e. aluminum borate whisker, potassium titanate whisker, calcium sulfate whisker on the toughness of the composites is studied. In addition, the influences of aluminum borate whisker on the mechanical performance and humidity resistance of the cyanate ester resin/glass fiber composites are discussed. It is found that the three kinds of whisker can enhance their flexural strength and impact strength. Compared with other two kinds of whisker, aluminum borate whisker has better modification result. The aluminum borate whisker can also enhance the interlaminar shear strength and the humidity resistance of the composites. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is also employed to analyze the fracture surfaces of the broken specimens. It is found that the 'nailing' effect and the 'retarding micro-crack growth' effect of the aluminum borate whisker are the key factors enhancing the toughness of cyanate ester resin and the interlaminar shear strength of the composites.
