Abstract

The dynamic response, energy absorption property, dissipated path and regular of impact energy of honeycomb sandwich panels subjected to bird impact at the speed of 80m/s and 120 m/s were studied by using numerical simulation. The results show that metallic honeycomb sandwich panels can absorb the impact energy well; the mechanisms of the energy absorption are the progressive collapse and tearing of the honeycomb cell and the bending and tensile deformation of the panel. The top face of the honeycomb panel contributes more to the whole energy absorption. e.g. At the speed of 80m/s, 60% of the energy is absorbed by the top face panel. The structure can be improved without additional weight to have better energy absorption capacity.
