Abstract
In this paper, sizing sensitivity analysis and optimization capabilities are developed based on the ABAQUS finite element system. This extension is made without access to ABAQUS source code. Design variables can be selected as cross section areas of bar elements, thickness of plane stress elements or flat and axisymetric shell elements. The direct differentiation method (DDM) is employed in the formulation of sensitivity analysis. Pseudo-load vector is efficiently computed by scaling properly the nodal internal forces of related elements. Numerical examples will be solved and results are discussed to show potential applications of this design tool.
