Abstract

Cordierite honeycomb ceramics were prepared by using three different kinds of clay, talc and alumina as raw materials, and sintered at 1 390°C for 4 h. The cordierite honeycomb ceramics prepared are of high purity and better crystallization. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the materials obtained are 1.48×10-6, 1.50×10-6/°C and 1.54×106/°C at the temperature range of 20-1000°C, and the corresponding porosities are 15%, 25% and 33% respectively. The lower coefficient of thermal expansion leads to an excellent property of thermal shock resistance and the higher porosity is helpful for further treatment. Experiments show that the correct choice for chemical compositions of raw materials and the impurities have remarkable influence on the thermal expansion coefficient of cordierite honeycomb ceramics.
