Abstract
The MPEG (Moving Picture Expert Group)-2 standard only defines the decoding structure of bit stream and permits great flexibility in motion prediction. We propose a MPEG-2 compliant algorithm that is more efficient than the bi-direction prediction algorithm under certain conditions. The five steps in working out the part of encoding algorithm used for motion prediction are presented. The test results show that the coding algorithm is less complex and gives a higher PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio).
