Abstract

To research forward acoustic scattering by submerged targets in an underwater waveguide, a virtual source model for target scattering in waveguides was developed. Experiments were conducted in a water tank and a lake. The simulation results showed that forward scattered signal strength is stronger than backward scattered signal strength. Actual measured forward target strength was about 3dB less than the modeled result. The results of experiments in a lake showed that perturbations in the received field caused by forward scattering of a moving object can be observed in a periodic continuous Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signal.
