Abstract

The microstructure evolution of AZ91D magnesium alloy during semisolid isothermal treatment and effects of strain on deformation microstructure with strain induced melt activation (SIMA) were investigated, and the semisolid spheroidization mechanism was also analyzed. The results showed that with the increase of strain at 350°C, the original microstructure of alloy changes from dendrites to nubbly crystal, and there are twin defects and dislocations in crystal; during 550°C isothermal treatment, with the time prolonging, the morphology of primary a phase changes gradually from dendrites to nubbly, to polygon and to spherical crystal eventually. When isothermal time is over-lengthened, the grains can combine and grow.
