Abstract

The 2D C/SiC composites in dimension of φ12.8 × 6.5 mm3, were assembled with rivets with diameters of 2.5 mm, 3.4 mm, 4.5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm respectively and infiltrated with SiC for 300 h. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests show that the fracture of the rivet took place, and the joint presented brittle fracture when the rivet diameter was less than 4.5 mm. Pulling out of the rivet took place, and the joint presented graceful fracture when the rivet diameter was bigger than 4.5 mm. The bigger the rivet diameter, the worse the properties of composite. Therefore the optimal rivet dimension should be slightly bigger than 4.5 mm.
