Abstract

After laser peening, the residual stress distribution was measured in 2mm thick clad 2024 T3 samples containing surface scribes by the hole drilling method. The profile and tendency of residual stress along sample depth parallel to and perpendicular to the line of the laser spot line was studied. The residual stress perpendicular to the line of the laser spot line is more tensile than the residual stress parallel to it by between 30MPa - 80MPa. The maximum tensile residual stress occurs at the spot surface; while the maximum compressive stress varied between 20-170MPa, these maxima taking place at the depths of 100-400um. The 3D finite element model was built by ABAQUS 6.10. The subroutine program was made and residual stress profiles were input to the numerical model. The effect of residual stress on fatigue parameter was investigated. Stress intensity caused by residual stress- Kres was calculated and studied.
