Abstract

This letter proposes a novel index and maximum distance separable (IMDS) modulation concept, in which both the index of multiple disjoint constellations and the classical amplitude and phase modulation (APM) symbols are used to convey information. In this regard, the signal constellation is firstly determined based on the index bits, and the other information bits are encoded to an MDS codeword, which is further mapped to symbols from the indexed constellation. A practical scheme using the IMDS concept and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is also proposed. In addition, an efficient low-complexity detector is designed for OFDM-IMDS. Furthermore, the bit error rate (BER), diversity order and spectral efficiency (SE) performance are analyzed. The analysis and numerical results show that OFDM-IMDS outperforms than OFDM-MDS, OFDM-IM and other existing OFDM schemes on SE and BER.
