Abstract

The in-situ real-time evolution of cracks in bulk metallic glasses was investigated by a high spatiotemporal resolution photographing system and SEM observation. A continuous and complicated cracking process was captured from crack initiation to final failure rather than simple crack propagation. The fracture process was controlled by a coupling effect of shear, normal stress component and heating during fracture process. Besides, the effect of normal stress is responsible for catastrophic failure of BMGs.
