Abstract

Effect of heat treatment on microstructure, mechanical and damping properties of Mg-0.8Zn-0.15Y-0.6Zr alloy was investigated. Experimental results show that the microstructure of as-cast and heat-treated alloy all consists of α-Mg and I-phase (Mg3YZn6), and I-phase is thermally stable during the process of heat treatment. A new Zr-rich α-Mg phase is formed when the heat treatment temperature is 400°C. Compared with the as-cast alloy, the tensile strength and the elongation of heat-treated alloy present a maximum increase of 15.2% and 10.4%, respectively. The damping capacity independent of strain amplitude gradually decreases with the increase of the heat treatment temperature.
