Abstract
To evaluate the error introduced during the experimental measurement of the solute distribution coefficient (k), a mathematical expression is presented with consideration of the effect of diffusion in the quenched solidifying samples on the composition distribution. It is concluded that the experimental error increases with an increase of δS, the diffusion distance during and after quenching, or a decrease of δL, the width of the solute enrichment region in front of the solidification interface.
