Abstract

Improved reliability and safety of the Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) power distribution systems on board of a ship are the objectives of this work. The authors propose the integration of the self-healing capability of the protection against power system faults, and the protection against measurement faults. Most of previous work in literature focuses on only one of these aspects at a time. Here, the authors propose a protection strategy that addresses the case of power system faults in conjunction with measurement system faults. The proposed approach must then be able to distinguish between the two types of failure. The recovery is achieved through control of the converters, to maintain power supply to the vital loads, and through data reconstruction, to replace invalid measured data.
