Abstract

A composite domain reconstruction topology optimization method (CDRTO) was presented, which could be used to interact with the designer to control the sub-domain's material distribution during the optimal design process. Firstly, a composite domain reconstruction topology optimization model was obtained. Secondly, generalized sequential approximate optimization algorithm was introduced and used to solve the optimization problem. Thirdly, sub-domain variable compression technology was developed for improving the efficiency. Finally, reconstruction method was proposed to improve the manufacturability of the design obtained from the topology optimization process. The CDRTO method was applied to the design of two realistic engineering design problems, including 'the X-style automobile frame design' and 'simultaneous optimization of structure and supports'. These case studies demonstrate the potential significance of the new method developed for a wide range of engineering design problems.
