Abstract

In this paper, the stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR) are calculated by means of distorted isoparametric elements. Both the displacement method and the virtual crack extension method are used. The calculated results are compared with seven approximate and empirical equations which are used in fracture experiments. An appraisal of the error of the equations has been made.
