Abstract

A protective coating, yttrium silicate/glass multi-layer for carbon/carbon (C/C) composites for the applications in aerospace and aircraft engines was discussed. It was observed that the SiC/gradient yttrium silicate/glass multilayer coating produced by pack cementation, plasma spray and sintering had excellent thermal shock resistance. This thermal shock resistance was found to be a good oxidation protective coating for C/C composites. It was found that the thermal shock resistance could protect the C/C composites from oxidation perfectly in air flowing by natural convection at 1773 K for 164 h.
