Abstract

A novel low profile antenna composed of a shorted conical monopole, a top-loaded circular patch and a probe feed is presented. The antenna can operate in two different modes: the monopole antenna mode and the microstrip antenna mode, which leads to down-tilt radiation patterns when the antenna is mounted on a wall. An antenna prototype with dimension of 5.5mm in height for WLAN operation in the 2.4-GHz band is demonstrated. Simulated and measured results show that the antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 560MHz (2.17-2.73GHz) and shaped-beam radiation patterns.
