Abstract

Based on the electromagnetic field equivalence principle, a new generalized RCS definition is proposed in this paper, which can be used for both near-field and far-field scenarios. The generalized RCS of typical objects (including the planar, cylinder and sphere object) is calculated and the results agree well with the traditional RCS results when the distance is far enough. Based on the new definition, by replacing the target with generalized RCS data and using the near-field aperture characterized radiation data instead of far field radiation patterns for transmitting/receiving antennas, the Friis equation is extended and a method for calculating radar received power is proposed. The calculated results agree well with the full wave simulated results (by FEKO).
