Abstract

With the advance of aeronautical technology, gear structure is becoming increasingly flexible. A number of aircraft accidents involving the vibration of helical gear structure have occurred. It is less and less permissible to consider helical gear structure as infinitely stiff. This paper adopts 3-D finite element models which can conveniently take the flexibility of gear structure into account. The calculations can be carried out with a micro-computer and require relatively short CPU time and relatively limited computer memory. Finally, the rational sizes of rim and web of helical gears for different web arrangements are recommended for improving the vibration characteristics of helical gears.
