Abstract
Currently, coal still serves as one of the main energy sources in China. The accumulative amount of coal gangue, a kind of solid waste generated during coal mining/ washing, is continuously increasing due to the incessant coal mining activities. Consequently, the coal gangue has become one of the largest global industrial residues. Such substantial accumulation not only leads to the significant resource waste, but also gives rise to severe environmental problems such as soil pollution, water hazards and air pollution. Hence, searching for efficient method towards coal gangue dispose and reuse is still highly desirable and urgent, especially with the strict environment regulations. Nevertheless, the conversion/ reuse is limited to the low-value applications like mine and subgrade backfilling at present. Considering the intrinsic porous structure and great compositional variability with specific functionalities in both modified coal gangue and derived zeolites, there is a great opportunity to develop coal gangue based adsorption materials for environmental protection like in waste water treatment. In this review, recent progress on the preparation of modified coal gangue and its derived zeolites towards water treatment is summarized. Beginning with a brief introduction of coal gangue, the modification is clarified including thermal modification, acid/base modification and others. Subsequently the method for transformation of coal gangue to zeolites is summarized with the formation of NaA, FAU and other type zeolites. Finally, current challenges and potential solutions in the utilization of coal gangue are proposed, offering an avenue to further unravel the characteristics of coal gangue and provide potential prospect to the high-value transformation and utilization of coal gangue.
