Abstract
The frame mold is the key tool for autoclave processing of composite panel structures. The stiffness and temperature uniformity of the mold have important influences on processing quality of composite structures. In this paper, to enhance the mold stiffness and temperature uniformity of the mold, the structure of a frame mold for autoclave processing of the composite panel is optimized using the topology optimization method. The performance of the initial and optimized molds are compared in terms of static deformation and temperature field of the mold. Results show that compared with that of the initial mold, the overall structure weight of the optimized mold is 16.04% lower (the weight of supporting structure is 33.6% lower), the static deformation is 27% lower, and the maximum temperature difference during the heating process is 29% lower, which demonstrates the validity of the optimized design method. The scaled sample of the optimized mold is then manufactured. The test results of the temperature distribution on the mold face show that the optimized mold has an excellent temperature uniformity.Validity of the simulation results is also verified experimentally.
