Abstract

Since the bonded composites are inevitably subjected to various environmental aging conditions in service, it is of great value to study the hygrothermal aging effects on adhesive bonded joints. It also shows different effects of mechanical properties and performances of failure modes when bonded with the same or other material in adhesive bonded structures. In this paper, two groups of double lap shear joints of Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates bonded using typical adhesive film J-271 were tested to investigate the hygrothermal effects on their mechanical behaviour. The specimens were subjected one of two conditions, either in room temperature/dry (RD), or in high temperature/wet (HW).Also, specimens in group A were bonded with the same laminates while those in group B with different laminates.Comparisons were carried out to analyze the hygrothermal effects on the degradation of properties and the corresponding damage modes. The results showed that the degradation of the tensile strength of the adhesive film was 31.4% after hygrothermal aging. The shear strength of joints in group A was 22.9% loss and in group B was 46.3% loss after hygrothermal aging. Both adhesive film destruction and composite fibre crack occurred. After hygrothermal aging, interfacial failure happened more obviously.
