Abstract
Measuring Young's modulus of solidified concretes with nondestructive test (NDT) has long been a challenge. This paper introduces a highly-nonlinear-solitary-waves(HNSWs)based transducer for measuringthe young's modulus of material with NDT. Three identical transducerswere utilized to test the Young's modulus of 9 concrete specimens from the same batch with different water-to-cement ratios of 0.42, 0.45 and 0.50 respectively after 28 days of solidification.ASTM C469 standard method was adopted to measure the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio; of 9 other specimens from the same batch. The results of HNSWsbased transducer and ASTM C469 method are compared, the deviation rates range from 1.85% to 6.48%, while the deviation rates between the results of UPV test and ASTM C469 method are much higher, ranging from 7.72% to 11.48%. The results show that the proposed transducer is superior than the NDT method with traditional UPV, has high repeatability and reliability, and can be applied in the young's moduli measurement ofconcretes.
