Abstract

The surface physical and chemical structural characteristics of T800S carbon fibers were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The fuzz mass of different domestic T800S carbon fibers were investigated by sponge friction. The results show that all the surface of three T800S carbon fibers are smooth with shallow grooves, which is the character of dry jet-wet spinning process. But the corresponding surface roughness is quite different. The surface roughness of two domestic T800S carbon fibers is 1.5~3 times that of Toray T800S, and the fuzz mass of domestic T800S carbon fibers is 8~12 times that of Toray T800S carbon fiber, suggesting a worse abrasion resistance. After abrasion, no fuzz and wear marks can be observed on the surface of Toray T800S carbon fiber, while there are obvious wear marks and "patches" on the surface of domestic ones, accompanying with a quite different fuzz shape. The surface structural information of domestic T800S carbon fibers is mastered by investigation. The wear resistance of domestic T800S carbon fiber is also preliminarily evaluated, providing guidance for selection and engineering application of domestic T800S carbon fibers.
